About Steph

Steph Dunnachie is an accomplished Australian reining trainer and clinician. Raised in Melbourne, she began her horse journey without a family equestrian background, building her skills through riding schools, trail riding, and eventually running her own riding centre. Her career has taken her from guiding mule trains in the Sierra Nevada to working on cattle ranches in California, before returning to Australia to establish Lancefield Bloodstock in Merton, Victoria, with her husband Mitch.

Focus on Reining

While her background spans multiple disciplines and the racing industry, Steph’s primary focus today is on reining horses and rider education. She develops competition-ready reining horses and runs clinics designed to help riders of all levels understand the precision, athleticism, and feel required for reining.

Her current work includes:

  • Training reining horses from foundation to competition level
  • Clinics and lessons across Australia, teaching fundamentals of reining and horsemanship
  • Mentorship for riders looking to transition into western performance sports
  • Sales preparation and guidance, helping match horses with the right riders

Achievements

Steph has established herself as a respected competitor and trainer, with highlights including:

  • Champion of the 2022 Race2Ranch Challenge at Cowgirls Gathering, retraining an Off The Track Thoroughbred in 150 days
  • Reserve Champion of Australia’s Greatest Horsewoman in 2023
  • SNSWRHA Open Futurity Champion in 2024
  • Multiple state and national reining titles across open and limited divisions

Training Philosophy

Steph’s philosophy balances precision with empathy. She believes in rewarding effort, building confidence, and creating clarity in every interaction. Her goal is not only to produce competitive reining horses but also to give riders the skills and feel to enjoy their training journey.

Legacy and Impact

Through her reining clinics, competition success, and work at Lancefield Bloodstock, Steph Dunnachie continues to influence Australia’s western performance community. She is recognised as a dedicated horsewoman who can bridge the gap between grassroots riders and the top levels of reining, always with the horse’s wellbeing at the centre of her program.

Demonstration / Clinic Summary

I’ll be running a series of reining mini clinics that focus on three key areas: Spins & Stops, Lead Changes, and Ranch Horse. Each clinic runs for two hours and is offered at both Novice and Intermediate levels, so riders can choose the session that best fits their experience. My goal is to make these maneuvers clear and achievable, giving you the building blocks to take home and practice with your horse.

1. Spins & Stops

Novice – 2 Hours
We’ll cover the basics of how to set your horse up for a correct spin, keeping balance and softness while building accuracy. For stops, I’ll show you how to create confidence and control, starting with body preparation and timing.

Intermediate – 2 Hours
We’ll refine the spin by working on cadence, speed, and precision, while keeping your horse light and responsive. For stops, we’ll develop consistency, looking at body position and how to build smooth, reliable slides.

2. Lead Changes

Novice – 2 Hours
I’ll break the lead change down into simple steps so you and your horse understand the timing, straightness, and body control needed to make it work.

Intermediate – 2 Hours
We’ll polish your lead changes, focusing on balance, reliability, and how to set your horse up to nail the change every time, whether in the arena or on the pattern.

3. Ranch Horse

Novice – 2 Hours
We’ll look at the foundation skills for ranch riding, from correct body control to introducing transitions, turns, and simple patterns in a calm and effective way.

Intermediate – 2 Hours
We’ll take it up a level by adding precision and detail to transitions and patterns, showing how to combine softness with forward energy for a polished ranch horse feel.

You can pick and choose the clinics that suit you best — whether you want to start with the basics, dive into a specific maneuver, or step up to the Intermediate sessions for more refinement. Each clinic is designed to stand on its own, so you’ll take away clear tools and progress no matter which option you join.
